Picture the scene. Ancient Greece.
A man lowers himself into a bath. The water rises. He pauses.
Then suddenly…… realisation strikes.
He leaps out, allegedly naked, and runs through the streets shouting “Eureka!”
That man? Archimedes. Now, at first glance, you might be wondering what a 2,000-year-old Greek mathematician has to do with your slow-draining sink in Surrey. Fair question.
But stick with us.
Because in that moment mid-bath, mid-splash, Archimedes unlocked something fundamental: how water behaves. How it moves. How it rises, falls, and reacts when something gets in its way.
Sound familiar?
Well, It should. Because whether it’s your kitchen sink refusing to empty, your shower backing up, or your outside drains struggling after heavy rain, the same principles are at play. Water doesn’t just disappear… it flows, it displaces, it responds.
And when something blocks that flow?
That’s when the trouble starts.
From Ancient Baths To Victorian Whiffs
Fast forward a couple of thousand years and things got… well, a bit smellier. Enter Joseph Bazalgette, the man who helped save London from the unforgettable Great Stink of 1858.
Back then, waste wasn’t going where it should. The system couldn’t cope. The result? A city-wide reminder that when water (and everything in it) stops flowing properly, life gets unpleasant extremely fast.
Bazalgette’s solution? Build a sewer system that actually works with the natural behaviour of water – keeping it moving, controlled, and heading firmly away from people’s homes! Different century, but the same principle: keep things flowing, or deal with the consequences.
“So What’s All This Got To Do With Your Drains?” We hear you cry….
Well, quite a lot actually.
Every drainage issue we see comes down to one simple truth: Water needs a clear path. Block that path, and it will:
- Slow down
- Back up
- Find another way out (usually where you don’t want it)
Whether it’s:
- Fat and grease solidifying in your pipes
- Hair building up in the shower
- Leaves and debris clogging outside drains
…it all interferes with the natural flow Archimedes first got excited about in his bath.
So Here’s A Few Eureka Moments To Keep Your Drains Flowing
1. Think before you pour
Fats, oils, and grease might go down as liquids but they cool, harden, and cling to your pipes.
Eureka! – Let them cool and pop them in the bin instead.
2. Catch it early
Slow-draining sink? Gurgling noises? Slight smells?
Eureka! – These are your early warning signs don’t ignore them.
3. Show your shower some love
Hair is one of the biggest culprits in bathroom blockages.
Eureka! – A simple drain cover can save you a bigger headache later.
4. Keep an eye outside
Leaves, moss, and general garden debris can quickly clog external drains especially after heavy rain.
Eureka! – A quick check now and then can prevent flooding later.
So, Is Archimedes A Drainage Legend?
Maybe not in the “unblocking your sink at 9pm on a Tuesday” sense. But without him, we wouldn’t understand the very thing that keeps your home running smoothly. And that’s the movement of water. And when that movement stops? That’s where we come in.
