Cold Weather, Warm Homes – But are your Drains Winter Ready?

Hard to believe it’s that time of year again – when the nights draw in, the kettle never gets a rest, and the nation collectively settles in front of the telly to watch Elf, Only Fools and Horses and The Great Christmas Bake Off reruns (even though we’ve all seen them at least seven times before). The heating’s on, (and so are the fluffy socks) the fairy lights begin to twinkle and life feels warm, familiar, and festive.

But while we’re keeping cosy indoors, our drains are out there braving the cold, the rain, and the odd snow shower quietly doing their job, until they’re not. Because winter isn’t just tough on us; it’s tough on your drains too. So before the next cold snap hits, it’s worth asking: are your drains Winter ready?

Frozen Pipes – The Silent Party Crashers

When temperatures plummet, standing water in outdoor pipes, gullies, or traps can freeze and expand, leading to cracks, leaks or complete blockages. Nothing ruins a Boxing Day lie-in quite like a flooded kitchen.

Drainage tip: Insulate exposed pipework with foam lagging, especially outside taps and waste pipes. A little prep now can save a lot of mopping later.

Autumn Leaves + Heavy Rain = Blocked Drains

Remember all those lovely Autumn leaves that looked so Instagrammable last month? They’re now clogging your drains, gutters, and downpipes. Add a few Winter downpours and you’ve got yourself a mini-Niagara Falls on the patio.

Drainage tip: Regularly clear leaves and debris from gullies and drain covers. If you spot water pooling after rainfall, it’s a sign your drains need a professional clean.

Fat, Oil, and Grease – A Recipe for Disaster

Winter cooking means comfort food — gravy, roasts, and all the trimmings. Unfortunately, your drains don’t share your appetite for rich, fatty leftovers. Fat, oil and grease (FOG) cool and solidify in your pipes, creating stubborn winter blockages.

Drainage tip: Pour cooled fats into a container and bin them instead of tipping them down the sink. Trust us – even Santa can’t deliver a cure for a Christmas fatberg.

Slow Drains? That’s Your Early Warning System

If your sinks, showers, or toilets are draining sluggishly, it’s your drainage system waving a little red flag. A small blockage now can turn into a big problem when the frost sets in.

Drainage tip: Get a CCTV drain survey from Happy Drains before Winter fully arrives. We’ll spot cracks, root ingress, and build-ups long before they cause trouble.

Heavy Rain and Flooding

Winter storms and melting snow can overwhelm your drainage system, especially if there’s a hidden blockage or damaged pipe. Surface water has nowhere to go – except back towards your home.

Drainage tip: Keep your drains clear, check your soakaways, and if you notice slow drainage after rainfall, book a professional drain clearance.
