How to Deal with Flood Damage

A flood within your home or work environment can result in a stressful and damaging time for all who are involved. The longer a water-damaged property is left, the more any destruction will increase.

You can minimise the damage created by a flood by dealing with it in the best way possible, making your homes recovery process as easy as possible.

There are multiple things you need to consider when coping with the aftermath of a flood, including clearing up after the immediate outcome and having to rehome for a while. You will also need to claim on any insurance policies, as well as making future plans to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Take Immediate Action

It’s important that when a flood has hit, immediate action is taken. These tips can help you out if you’re unsure where to start.

·         If you are able to, gather together any valuables and keepsakes in order to get them somewhere safe and dry.

·         Secure your property as well as you can.

·         Prepare to leave your home and find temporary accommodation.

·         You can contact the National Flood Forum if you are unable to find somewhere to live.

·         The National Flood Forum says it can take between 6 and 12 months for a home to be habitable again, so prepare for the long-haul.

Contact your Insurance

Contacting your insurance company is one of the first steps you need to take. It’s important you get their permission before any action is taken.

·         Ensure you don’t get rid of any items that could be of value, even if they are ruined. This could affect your insurance claim.

·         If you rent your home, contact your landlord as soon as possible.

·         Make a thorough list of any damaged or lost items.

·         If any repairs are needed urgently, get them done but inform your insurer and keep any receipts or details safe.

·         It is often recommended you obtain pictures or videos of the damage for your insurer.
