Save your drains this Christmas

It’s December and before we know it, we’ll be sitting down to that turkey dinner celebrating Christmas Day. The year’s gone by fast but don’t make big celebrations this winter ruin your drains.

Christmas can be a busy time for your household drainage, with all that extra food waste, as well as family and friends visiting more often using your water, toilet, and shower.

So this Christmas, if you’re in charge of the washing up after dinner, BIN DON’T POUR all of your leftovers. Putting any waste down our plugholes isn’t great for our drains so don’t pour that gravy down the sink, scrape your plate remnants down the plughole or tip that fat into the bowl – it’s wrong!

Fat from the turkey, oils from our roast potatoes, scrapings of left-over vegetables, cranberry sauce remnants and that skin on cold custard all needs to be disposed of correctly, NOT poured down our drains, as when this happens, blockages and grime build up in the pipes causing a whole load of problems,

What should we do with food waste and Christmas Dinner remnants?

Compost it – Most of us now have a roadside collection of food waste, so this is where you should be putting all your kitchen waste and leftovers

Catch it before it goes down the plughole – Buy yourself a sink strainer to catch bits of food caught in gravy, sauces or just on the plate, then throw the bits from the strainer into your food waste bin

Bin it– As fats and oils cool, they harden, so if you’re pouring these down your sink, you’ll most likely be left with a large blockage. Soak up leftover sauces, fats and oils with kitchen roll and put in the bin, or tip into a container, let harder and then bin it.

Use it in your garden – Some of your leftovers can be left out for wildlife or your garden plants to enjoy. Check online for what you can and can’t leave out in your garden to feed the animals and your plants.
