What is a U-Bend: How do you Clean It? (Without Flooding the Kitchen)

The humble U-bend — also known as a trap — is a small but mighty hero of your drainage system. Tucked under your sink, this little curve in the pipe does two essential jobs:

  • It traps water to stop nasty sewer gases from wafting back up into your home (because nobody wants Eau de Drain lingering in the lounge).
  • It catches debris before it heads deeper into your plumbing and causes a full-on blockage.

But like any part of your home, it needs a bit of TLC now and then. Here’s how to clean your U-bend without making a mess or losing your lunch.

Step 1: Bucket First, Always

Before you touch a thing, grab a bucket and stick it under the U-bend. Trust us — there’s always water in there, and it’s never fresh from the tap.

Unscrew the U-bend by hand (they’re usually hand-tightened), but keep a wrench nearby just in case it’s stubborn. Let the water drain into your bucket, then dispose of it — preferably outside or down the loo.

Step 2: Time to Get Gunky

Once the U-bend is off, brace yourself — this is where the fun begins.

Use something like a wire brush, a plumbing snake, or even a straightened coat hanger to remove any debris. Hair, food gunk, mystery sludge… you’ll likely find it all. (Pro tip: wear gloves and try not to breathe through your nose.)

Step 3: Rinse & Refit

Once it’s clear, give the U-bend a good rinse under running water. Make sure it’s clean and gunk-free.

Now, reattach it carefully — and tighten it securely. A loose U-bend means leaks, and leaks mean soggy cabinets and regret. No one wants that.

Still Blocked? We’ve Got You.

If cleaning your U-bend doesn’t solve the problem (or you’d rather not wrestle with one at all), we’re just a phone call away.
