7 Tips On Keeping Your Drains In Perfect Condition

Don’t let everything go down the plughole!

When washing dishes or cooking trays, don’t let fatty oils or bits of food make its way down your drain. And in the bathroom, catch hairs going down there too. These are the main issues which can cause a blocked drain, so to prevent a build up from happening, restrict what goes down the plug hole.

Inspect your drains and pipes monthly

Give your plughole, drains, and pipes a once over each month to check they’re all working correctly. Run through a mild drain cleaner to dissolve grease and keep the drains flowing. Boiling water down the plughole regularly helps to flush out bad smells and small blockages too.

Use a chemical cleaner

You can get these types of cleaners in most supermarkets and home stores along with lots of other drain and plug hole cleaning products. These cleaners are great at washing out any debris within your drains and are ideal for a once over, quick, and easy clean. You can also buy more powerful cleaners to do bigger jobs, and these can mostly be got from DIY stores of plumbing merchants.

Get a drain guard

This does what it says on the tin, a drain guard guards your drain from unwanted debris heading down to your pipes through the plughole. Useful in the bathroom as well as a kitchen, these can catch food, fats, hair, and other debris.

Don’t forget outside

You might just think that all your outdoor drains are working as they should be – as when they’re out of sight, it’s easy to forget about them and their maintenance.  Your gutters and outdoor drains can also collect lots of debris as well as so it’s important to look over these every now and again.

Keep your plughole and pop-up stopper clean

If you have a pop-up stopper in your bathroom sink (many modern bathrooms do), these can often store a build-up of soap scum, toothpaste and hair which can cause drain and pipe blockages. Pull the stopper out regularly to give it a good clean to prevent any issues.

Get some baking powder

Baking powder is a brilliant household cleaner and a great tip for cleaning drains is pouring some baking powder down the drain, followed by hot water. This can help to get rid of any bad smells and push away blockages.
