Away for Christmas? You Can still Take Care of your Pipes!

Many people who go away over the Christmas period tend to worry about leaving their house all alone- expecting things might go wrong somewhere. However, in order to help ease your worries slightly, we can help you to take care of your pipes even whilst you are away, leaving you knowing they are protected and shouldn’t give you any issues.

  • Insulation

Before packing your bags and leaving your house over winter, ensure you have put some insulation around your pipes, helping to prevent your pipes from freezing. Frozen pipes can lead to them breaking, cracking or leaking, which will cause more troubles for you once you’re home. Insulating your pipes will ensure your hot water will be ready and waiting for you once you’ve returned home. This is an easy, quick and effective way to prevent any unfortunate issues within your home.

  • Main Water Supply

When leaving your home for a night or longer, turn off your water supply. Turning off your main water supply means the pipes should have little to no water in them, making it difficult for them to freeze and crack. However, if you wish to ensure all water is removed from your pipes, turn on all the taps to drain as much water out of possible. This can help to release any pressure that has built up, reducing the risks of pipes bursting whilst you are away.

  • Ask someone to check on your home

If you have family members nearby or are friendly with your neighbours, asking them to check on your house every week or so whilst you are away can really help to put your mind at ease. If any problems arise, they will be able to let you know to help prevent any further damage. You could ask them to check your heating is coming on (at a low temperature) to keep the house and pipes warm as well as save money. They could even check your pipes insulation to ensure it is working well and that the pipes aren’t freezing.

Preparing your pipes before you go away throughout the winter is a great way of ensuring you won’t have any further issues to deal with once you have returned. If you’d like further information on how you could look after your pipes throughout the winter, or you need some help on fixing them now you’ve returned, we’d be happy to help.
