CCTV Drain Surveys – what you should be looking for with the results from a CCTV drain survey and when you should get one?

When & why would you need a CCTV Drain Survey?

CCTV surveys can be useful in several situations e.g.: you can arrange for a pre-purchase drain survey before buying a new home. This survey will give you a precise review of the current condition the drainage system, and an overview of any repairs which may be needed soon. This gives you the opportunity to make a fully informed decision before purchasing a new property.

Homeowners/tenants may also need a CCTV survey when faced with a one off or ongoing drain issues. They can find the cause of a problem and are great if you’ve got a problem but have no idea why.

What might a survey find?

A CCTV drain survey will cover any drainage issue you could possibly have.

Delivering an extensive review of your drainage system they can be used to find major and minor issues including structural damage to grim build-up. A CCTV drain survey can help to identify:

  • Blockages
  • Collapsed drains
  • Displacement or poor installation
  • Tree roots
  • Leaks/bursts in pipes & their causes
  • Wear and tear
  • Corrosion
  • Evidence of animals

The findings

Once you’ve had the survey done, the full drainage report should include the following elements:

  • Pipe diameters
  • Material of pipe
  • Invert levels of accessible manholes
  • Direction of flow
  • Length of drain
  • Usage of drain
  • Any connections, water levels and observations within each drain run
  • Images of each observation
  • A plan of all manholes labelled in conjunction with the report

Having the survey will probably bring to light many defects, BUT it should also detail which ones are actually a concern as not all defects actually need repairing. When receiving the results make sure you personally look at the findings and pick your own faults. Only get repaired what the CCTV Drain Survey states needs looking at – otherwise you could be out of pocket.
