What to do if you drop something down the drain

Ooops, that’s that then! Many of us are familiar of that feeling when we drop something down the drain – whether that’s our keys down a manhole, our phone down the loo or a contact lens down the plug hole. But what should we do if we drop something down the drain? You can always contact us as professionals but there are somethings you can try at home first.

Dropping something down the sink

Turn off the water – this way you’ll be able to get to your plumbing without the risk of flooding.

Remove the drain plug – you might be able to grab you item from here
If not, then clear out the area underneath the fixture (like your under-sink cupboard so you can access everything easily).

Put a bucket or bowl under the fixing to catch the water from the pipes.

Find the P-Trap and remove and empty it into the bucket– your item should be in here

Dropping something down the loo

DON’T FLUSH! As once you’ve flushed you’ve pretty much lost it for good. So, if you care bare it don some rubber gloves and get fishing. It might not be pretty, and you might have to give your belongings a good clean – but at least you’ll have it back.

While out on a public highway

It’s not uncommon for people to drop keys or phones down drains on the side of the pavement so if this ever happens to you contact your council immediately. They should be able to come and assist.
