How to fix a blocked kitchen sink.

We’ve all been there, you’ve just cooked a Sunday lunch for the family, the Yorkshire puddings have risen, it’s been a huge success. Then it comes to the clean-up. To get started you fill the kitchen sink up and begin washing up the never-ending stack of plates, pots and cups. What feels like hours later you finally get the job done and empty the bowl. Then it happens. The sink blocks!

The most common cause of a kitchen sink being blocked is, you guessed it, food. Peas, beans and remaining food on your plates when washed down the sink can build up over time causing a blockage which can prevent water from running down your sink and into your drainage system.

As always, we advise when possible, and safe to do so, to try a DIY home fix of the issue. This can always be a good project which can save you money and give you an extra skill or two that you never had before. However, depending on the blockage, one of our expert professional engineers will be best to carry out the work.

How can I try and solve it?

Believe it or not, boiling water is one of the most common solutions to clear blockages in your kitchen sinks. It’s cheap, easy and accessible so always start with kettle-boiled water. Before you get started, make sure any standing water within your sink is clear as much as possible and pour the boiling water down the sinkhole. We recommend trying this several times and you can always add some salt to it. Salt can also be mixed with baking soda which is a great combination to clear clogs in your kitchen sink. Once poured down your sinkhole, leave for a couple of hours and wash down with boiling water again.

If these homemade remedies haven’t done the trick, don’t panic, we’ve got one more trick up our sleeve. Reach for a common household plunger. If you have a two-sink set up in your kitchen block the second one with a wet cloth. Make sure the blocked sinkhole is fully covered with the plunger and give is some welly, repeat, repeat and remove any debris that is plunged from the sink as you go.
