New Year, New Home – What to check in regard to drains when looking at buying

There are a number of feelings and emotions that you will go through when buying a new home – excitement, tiredness, stress… the list goes on. But one thing you don’t want to be worrying about is the drainage at your new address.

Drains and the drainage system are often forgotten when moving/buying and you definitely don’t want any nasty surprises such as tree roots, backed-up sewage or collapsed pipes. Many homes can look great on the surface, but it’s not until you’ve officially moved in that any undiagnosed problems with your drainage system will quickly rear their ugly head.

So, what can you do?

If you’re in the process of viewing properties, check pipes on viewings and ask your estate agent about the drains and drainage in the area. Look around outside for public drain manhole covers on the property and question these with your estate agent.

If you’re in the middle of a purchase, you can ask your solicitor to ask the water company about local drainage when they contact them to confirm your purchase of the new address.

Buying a new build home? Check your warranty. Take a long look at what you are and are not covered for.

But if you want to tick all the boxes, get a CCTV drain survey with us! A CCTV drain survey will mean that the drainage system is thoroughly looked at. We’ll be able to inform you of any leaks, displaced joints or pipes, root intrusion or collapse. We can also show you which part of the drain specifically belongs to you, so if any problems do arise, you’ll know who is responsible.
