There are plenty of good reasons to avoid digging up your garden.
The lawn you spent all summer looking after.
The new patio.
The flower beds.
The decking.
The mysterious patch of earth the previous owner specifically told you never to disturb.
Hang on.
This is October.
Definitely don’t disturb that.
Fortunately, when an underground drain is damaged, digging everything up isn’t always the only option.
Welcome to the considerably less terrifying world of no-dig drain repair.
What Is a No-Dig Drain Repair?
Traditionally, repairing a damaged underground drain could involve locating the problem, then excavating down to the pipe, then carrying out the repair and then putting everything back again.
Sometimes that’s still necessary.
But depending on the type and extent of the damage, modern no-dig or trenchless repair techniques can allow a damaged pipe to be repaired largely from the inside.
Which means potentially less excavation, less disruption and considerably less chance of discovering that your garden was once an ancient burial ground.
Always a bonus.
So How Does It Work?
First, we need to know what’s actually happening underground.
A CCTV drain survey allows the inside of the pipe to be inspected and the damaged area identified. The pipe can then be cleaned and prepared for repair.
Depending on the problem, a liner can be installed inside the existing pipe, creating a new surface within it. For smaller areas of damage, a localised patch repair may be possible instead.
Think of it rather like repairing the pipe from the inside out, rather than digging down from the outside.
No enormous trench.
No mountain of soil.
No standing in your garden wondering why you’ve just uncovered a Victorian boot.
Less Digging. Less Disruption. Fewer Zombies.
There are some very sensible reasons for choosing a no-dig repair when the condition of the drain allows it.
If the damaged pipe runs beneath a driveway, patio, landscaped garden or other finished area, excavation can turn a relatively straightforward drain repair into a much bigger job.
Digging down to the pipe is only half the story.
You’ve then got to put everything back.
And somehow that patio never seems quite as enthusiastic about going back together as it was about coming apart.
No-dig techniques can significantly reduce the amount of excavation and reinstatement required.
And during October, they offer another important advantage.
Anything already buried in the garden gets to stay buried.
We think everyone can agree that’s for the best.
Can Every Drain Be Repaired Without Digging?
Sadly, no.
No-dig repair isn’t a magic spell. (we wish..)
If a pipe has badly collapsed, become severely displaced or suffered damage that makes lining unsuitable, excavation and replacement may still be necessary.
That’s why investigating the problem properly comes first.
A CCTV survey can help establish the condition of the drain and determine whether a no-dig solution is suitable or whether it’s time to fetch the spades.
If it is the latter, we’d probably recommend doing it during daylight hours.
Just in case.
Something Wrong Underground? Let’s Look Before We Dig.
If you’ve got recurring blockages, leaks, strange smells or suspect a damaged drain, don’t immediately assume that half the garden needs excavating.
Happy Drains can investigate the problem, identify the damage and advise on the most appropriate repair.
And if it can be repaired without digging up your lawn, patio or driveway, even better.
Your garden will thank you.
Your patio will thank you.
And whatever has been buried underneath the shed since 1973 can remain exactly where it is.
Happy Drains – fixing what’s underground without necessarily digging it up.
Some things are better left buried.
Best,
David & Will
