Power Couple: Vinegar and Baking Soda for your drains

Vinegar. It’s a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. Whilst we think that you can’t have a Friday fish supper without it, Happy Drains are here today to tell you why it’s a great tip for unblocking your drains.

Once you start to smell a nasty odour from your sink or bath you know you’ve got a problem, this can also affect the flow down the drain and blockages may have occurred. To deal with this problem, vinegar and baking soda are the newest power couple under your sink.

First off, if you don’t already have some in the cupboard pick yourself up some Baking Soda, which is widely available from all major retail shops in London, and can be used for a number of handy jobs around the house.

Here’s how to put it to good use and tackle your smelly drains.

Step 1: Start off by pouring some boiling hot water down your sink or bath holes. This will start the pre-blockage process.

Step 2: Once done, grab a standard size cup or mug and fill it halfway with traditional baking soda, then add a further half a cup of vinegar. Mix well.

Step 3: Pour the mixture down the sink and cover with a drain plug.

Step 4: Leave for a 5 minutes, followed by another shot of boiling water to make sure the unwanted blockage has been cleared.

Step 5: Give it another 5 minutes and your homemade combination of baking soda and vinegar should have done the job and cleared the blockage and removed the unwanted smell from your sink.

If for any reason this great home remedy step hasn’t worked, there’s no need to worry. It could be a more serious drainage issue that one of experienced Happy Drains engineers can come out, investigate and resolve for you.
