Adding plants and new soil
The easiest option to prevent or help in the case of a flood is to have lots of trees and plants around. It may be a good idea to place lots of plants around the river or area that is likely to flood. This means greater interception and a lower river discharge as the plants will absorb as much as they can. Having new soil may also help. If the soil is flattened down, it makes it harder for the water to be absorbed by it, whereas newer soil will be able to absorb it and store it for a while. This is one of the cheapest and quickest ways to prevent a flood in your nearby area.
River engineering
River engineering is a more extreme option but involves the river being widened or depended to allow it to carry more water. The river could also be made straighter, so it flows faster along the course, however this could cause a greater risk further downstream as it will be moving faster in that area. It could also be changed so that it is diverted away from any near by settlements to remove any risks.
Suitable drainage systems
Suitable drainage systems can also help to stop this kind of event happening. In big areas with concrete and tarmac, it is harder for water to pass through. The water in these areas are channeled into drainage systems which can be difficult to deal with. In 2010, the flood act meant that builders must make sure on developing landscapes, that water from the roofs and driveways seeps into the open ground and not use the water systems. Detention basins can be built to hold the rain water so that it does not flow into the river so that it could potentially over flow.
